What health effects are associated with asbestos exposure?

Asbestosis and Mesothelioma

Asbestos exposure can cause two distinct health outcomes: asbestosis, a scarring (fibrosis) of the lung tissue that reduces breathing capacity, and mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining around the lungs (and sometimes the abdomen). These represent classic, well-established asbestos-related effects, with mesothelioma being particularly associated with asbestos exposure. In addition, exposure also increases the risk of lung cancer, but that option alone doesn’t capture the fibrotic lung disease linked to asbestos. Emphysema and bronchitis are not specific to asbestos exposure, as they are typically tied to smoking or other factors.
